Marseille is situated in the southwestern part of France, in one of its most beautiful regions: Provence.The conference will be held at the Luminy campus, which is located right next to the hills surrounding Marseille. There are many nice walks taking you from CIRM into the hills, and in less than an hour one can reach the stunning calanques (the Mediterranean equivalent of fjords).
If you have the opportunity to stay in France for a longer period, we highly recommnend that you visit more of Provence: Marseille of course, but also beautiful places such as Aix en Provence, Avignon, les Baux de Provence, or Orange. You might also enjoy taking a 2-3 day road-trip in the middle of the lavender fields.
Alternatively, you could take advantage of your stay in France to visit Paris, which is only 3 to 4 hours away from Marseille by train. Don't wait to the last minute to make your reservation: the earlier you book your tickets, the cheaper they'll be.
