Bandeau du Laboratoire d'Informatique & Systèmes (LIS)
The Computer Science and Systems Laboratory (LIS – Laboratoire d’Informatique et Systèmes – UMR 7020) is a new structure resulting of the merge of two CNRS/University labs: the Laboratoire d’Informatique Fondamentale de Marseille (LIF - UMR 7279) and the Laboratoire des Sciences de l’Information et des Systèmes (LSIS - UMR 7296).

LIS is a research lab (UMR) under the supervision of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientfique (CNRS), Aix-Marseille University and University of Toulon with the Ecole Centrale de Marseille (ECM) as a partner.

LIS premises are located on the university campus of Saint-Jérôme and Luminy in Marseille and on the campus of the University of Toulon. It comprises more than 375 members: 190 tenure researchers and professors, about 125 doctoral students and 40 post-docs and 20 technical staff.
This new structure brings together the strengths and competences of the two LIF and LSIS laboratories, to meet new scientific challenges.

Research activities in LIS are structured in 4 thematic departments:

  • Calculus : theoretical computer science, logic, algorithmic and complexity, quantum computing, geometric and topology, artificial intelligence
  • Data Science : machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, information retrieval, artificial intelligence
  • Signal and Image : image processing, audio and bio-signal processing, medical imaging, image modelling
  • System Analysis and Automatic Control : control theory, diagnostic, decision theory, system simulation and modeling

Each department is made of a set of teams focused on various scientific topics studied either from a fundamental or an applicative point of view.

LIS has a strong disciplinary identity, structured within these departments, and focused on the fundamental and applied activities in the fields of computer science, automation, signal and image. Multidisciplinary research is also encouraged, inside the lab as several teams belongs to more than one department, and in the regional ecosystem through the active participation of several teams in the two newly created multidisciplinary institutes “Instituts Convergence” : ILCB "Language, Communication and Brain Institute", and the Centuri Institute "Turing Center for Living Systems".

Researchers and professors of our lab are involved in several university cursus at the University of Aix-Marseille, Ecole Centrale Marseille and University of Toulon (IUT, License, Master, PhD programs, engineering school).
